Dear Recruiters

In the past two months, I have dealt with about ten recruiters. Initially, emails from recruiters are so pleasant. They usually introduce themselves and compliment my book and design skills. Then a week later, they follow up with a screening call. A recruiter once told me, “You will be a good fit for the Dream team!” For a moment, I felt so happy that my job hunting was almost over, and I could focus all my energy on school again. It took me about four months to build my portfolio and learn CSS. And then I never heard from the company again. It was exhausting. Before every interview, I spent hours researching the company’s values, mission, and most recent work, to show up prepared.

The next phone call went well. Better than I thought, honestly. The recruiter said, “I follow up next week with more details about the second interview.” Ten days go by and nothing. I send a follow-up email. Ten more days go by, and no reply. This experience feels like a roller coaster. For days, you wander in thoughts thinking that you finally found a job with a company you like. As the days go by, you learn not to take things personally and trust the process, and let yourself get loose.

It’s a new day, and my job hunting continues. I want to say thank you, dear recruiters. Sometimes, I forget you are people with a heart and blood running to your veins. You have taught me to believe in myself and confidently speak about my skills. You taught me that good preparation is key to success and I should not sound rehearsed. I learned to let my personality shine and give a high number when asked about salary. I also learned that not every company is a good fit. So thank you, and I’d hope our paths didn’t have to cross again, but we both know that’s unlikely.
